BACK TO FISH
Gouramies
and Anabantids include some of the most colourful of freshwater
aquarium fishes. Most types are hardy,
peaceful and very easy to care for. They also have
an active and decorative manner, all this making them popular
sellers. These fishes are also known as Labyrinth
fish. They regularly rise to the surface to take
a gulp of air and can gradually absorb the oxygen from
it by means of an extra breathing organ called the labyrinth
organ. This allows them to survive in waters with
low oxygen levels, such as in very warm swampy areas. Many
Gouramies also have long thin pelvic fins that are efficiently
used as feelers.
Most
Gouramies are not fussy about water conditions, as long as
extremes are avoided; they also have good appetites
and will eat a wide variety of foods. They are ideal
fish for tropical community aquariums. Paradise fish
are just as easy to look after and have a wide temperature
tolerance, able to survive temperatures down to 8 C and
even lower. They can be kept in heated or unheated
aquaria, goldfish bowls and outdoor ponds, but they sometimes
can be quarrelsome to other tank mates.
Gouramies
and Anabantids are egglayers, the males of most species construct
a bubble nest at the water surface,
usually amongst floating plants. During spawning
the eggs are placed in the nest, the male then tending
and guarding the eggs until they hatch and become free
swimming. Breeding can readily occur in the retailer’s
aquarium or in the home aquarium, particularly when plenty
of water plants are present at the surface and when the
aquarium is not heavily stocked.
Here at Pet City Joondalup we stock
